Art and Arches

Checked out my photos from the trip looking for blog inspiration, and realized that either:

1) my eye is drawn to arches or

2) that's all we're seeing.

Probably the latter. These photos are from Cordoba, Ronda, and Seville--cathedrals inside mosques, cinemas inside old Moorish buildings, Roman bridges, contemporary art galleries, Alcazar gardens.

My favourite of all the above is the series of arches that are at the lower left (goldish). These are to the side of a lovely pool in the gardens of Alcazar, built for the women of the house as a retreat from the heat.

As for art, Ken and I discovered a Spanish artist unknown to us (undoubtedly very well known to many of my readers--we're just cretins) who we both loved. His name is Julio Romero de Torres (Cordoba 1874-1930), and we toured a gallery museum dedicated to his art. Here are a few of our favourites (sorry abut the light). Expressive, haunting, beautiful.

Also enjoying the public art and graffiti here--not many of the doors are as elegantly etched as this one.

And we haven't even visited Madrid yet. Looking forward to Jheronimus Bosch!

Love those gold arches too. And the paintings. Who is the woman ..she features in a few of his paintings?

Replying to

She seems to be a young girl—Maria Lopez— who would have been about 14 at the time of La Chiquita Piconera, the painting of the young woman alone.
